Hurricanes
MFA Thesis Statement
This print series utilizes infrared hurricane images. These overly used icons have dominated the news media since Katrina devastated Louisiana. Hurricanes are unpredictable and destructive forces of nature that cannot be controlled. I have employed fictional robotic appendages to emphasize this destructive force, for example the claw like hand from a Transformers character that consumes entire planets in order to survive. By pairing pixilated hurricane images with realistic artificial appendages, I’m questioning the reality between mass media communication and fictional pop culture icons. The outlined figures who occupy the foreground represent the patriotic Americans who are unaffected by said disasters, so they appear as oblivious observers rather than victims.
